Escape to the Orient with Sandalwood Essential Oil
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Sandalwood essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the plant santalum album. Its origins are mostly from India and the east, with the Mysore sandalwood the most sought after and renowned of sandalwood. Due to a severe restriction by the Indian government, very little quantities of sandalwood are cut for production yearly, making the essential oil very scarce. Since it is one of the most coveted of essential oils, this has had a profound effect on the price of sandalwood essential oil, which has rocketed in the past few years. It is now one of the most expensive essential oils on the market.

Sandalwood essential oil is of a clear color with a yellow tinge, and it has a medium to thick consistency. Its aromatic description is listed as rich, sweet, floral, warm, and woody. It has a medium initial aroma. In perfumery, it is used as a base note and also to hold other scents together. This most Oriental of essential oils can be used as a perfume in its own right. It should first be diluted in a carrier oil though.

Sandalwood essential oil has antiseptic, antidepressant, diuretic, tonic, bactericidal, calmative, anti-infectious, decongestant, muscle spasm and pain reliever, heart regulating, and circulation boosting properties.

This oil is mostly regarded as an aid to meditation and spiritual growth, and also as an aphrodisiac. It is widely used in skincare, and is known as the universal blender, which can be used with almost all other essential oils.

On an emotional level, it has a euphoric yet grounding psychological effect which promotes well-being.

Other possible uses of sandalwood oil are for bronchitis, depression, laryngitis, leucorrhea, stress, stretch marks, chapped skin, dry skin, oily skin, and scars.

If properly stored, sandalwood essential oil can be kept indefinitely. It is one of the few oils that improve with age, as the oxidation process improves its scent. Proper storage conditions are at 5-25 degrees Celsius, in well-sealed glass bottles, and in a dry, well ventilated area away from direct heat and sunlight.
